Welcome to the home of the Red Dragons!
Dragon Boat Racing started in China around 2000 years ago, and was commissioned
in Redcliffe in May 2005. Redcliffe paddlers, The Red Dragons, train locally and
compete at interclub regattas from Tin Can Bay to Tweed Heads, Colmslie to Canberra.
Some club members have paddled for Queensland and Australia.
Dragon Boat racing is a great team sport, unlike traditional team sports, all paddlers
are equal and have the same load to pull. The Boat is like a large canoe with a
Dragons head and tail. Paddlers face forward and sit in pairs. The team consists
of 20 paddlers, a drummer and a sweep. Races are held over 250 and 500 metre distances.
The great thing about Dragon Boat Paddling is that you can be any age, any level
of fitness, even completely unfit, and it requires no initial skill. The technique
is simple, and results come quickly. Changes in fitness and the body, can be seen
in the first six months, with men muscling up and women toning and tightening.
Teams are made up of :-
- Mixed ( men & women ),
- Men,
- Women,
- Breast cancer survivors, and
- Juniors 12 years to under 18 years.
We are an active Club that supports local community functions :-
- Redcliffe First Settlement
- Get Out Get Active
- Kids in Need Fund Raiser Regatta
- Chinese New Year
If you know that you need more exercise in your life, or you just want to get out
on the water and have some fun, think about giving Dragon Boat Paddling/Racing a
go. Redcliffe Dragons have many training sessions a week, and are keen to welcome
new members.
